James Worthy was born in Gastonia, North Carolina on February 27, 1961. When he played for the school, his team played well in the state championship game and the team was able to reach the championship thanks to his 21.5 points and 12.5 rebounds. and 5.5 assists per game. After high school, James went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. However, he broke his ankle in his freshman year. During his sophomore year, he was a vital member of the school’s 1981 NCAA runner-up team, along with Al Wood and Sam Perkins.
He was a junior forward and leading scorer for the Tar Heels’ NCAA championship team, which featured NBA legends like Sam Perkins and freshman Michael Jordan. James managed to dominate the 1982 championship game against the Georgetown Hoyas. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament.
