Biography of John Brennan
John Brennan was the son of Owen and Dorothy (Dunn) Brennan and was born in North Bergen, New Jersey. His Irish father, a metal forger, immigrated to New Jersey in 1948 from County Roscommon, Republic of Ireland. He attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Elementary School before continuing his education at Saint Joseph of the Palisades High School in West New York, New Jersey.
Brennan attended Fordham University and earned a degree in political theory. In 1976, as an alternate, he voted for Communist Party USA presidential candidate Gus Hall. After Fordham, Brennan attended the University of Texas at Austin in 1980, earning a Master of Arts in Government with a focus on Middle Eastern Studies. He speaks Arabic fluently. His exams included a year of less intensive Arabic study abroad and attending classes at the American University in Cairo.
While driving to class at Fordham, he noticed an ad in The New York Times saying the CIA was recruiting. He concluded that working for the CIA would be a good fit for his “hunger for new experiences” and desire for public service. In 1980, he reported to the CIA. During his application, he admitted to a lie detector test that he had voted for a rival Communist Party four years earlier. Surprisingly, he was still recognized; he later stated that he thought it was encouraging that the CIA valued freedom of speech.

Along with various other intelligence organizations, the CIA concluded that Russia colluded to influence the political race for Republican Donald Trump, who eventually defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton.
