John Salley was born in Brooklyn, New York on May 16, 1964. While still in high school, he signed up to play high school basketball at Canarsie High School in Brooklyn. He was able to graduate from the Georgia Tech College of Management in 1998. He held the singles foul record for Georgia Tech while still in college. He had the honor of having his jersey retired.
