Professors from the University of Florida had high hopes for Joseph Ladapo. However, their faith in him was quickly lost. In 2021, the institution fast-tracked his nomination as tenured professor along with his appointment as Florida surgeon general. Gov. Ron DeSantis’ pick for the state’s chief medical officer, Joseph Ladapo, impressed them with his Harvard training and experience as a research professor at UCLA and New York University. Researchers predicted that Joseph Ladapo would bring in at least $600,000 in grants for his new job from his previous role at UCLA.
That was untrue. They thought they would study internal medicine and fulfill the guidelines in the job letter. Instead, he wrote a memoir outlining his reservations about vaccines, lectured graduate students, and edited scientific research articles. Joseph Ladapo’s opposing views on COVID-19 rules and immunizations during his tenure as surgeon general have garnered national attention. Claiming that the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines pose a risk to young, healthy men and warning people under the age of 65 not to get the latest booster doses for COVID-19, he challenged the medical establishment.
He was also criticized for approving hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malaria drug promoted by the late President Donald Trump as a cure for the coronavirus. Further investigation showed that the drug did not prevent COVID-19. Joseph Ladapo immediately raised a red flag, even though the state had offered permanent jobs of the same kind to previous appointments. Although it often takes months to interview and evaluate candidates for tenured faculty positions, Ladap’s application was completed in less than three weeks. As with anyone going through the appointment process, “a lot of people thought he was vetted by the School of Medicine,” said a current University professor who was granted permission to speak freely and remain anonymous.
