F. Murray Abraham is an American actor. In the 1980s, he rose to fame for his portrayal of the Academy Award-winning Antonio Salieri in the television series Amadeus (1984). Abraham was nominated for a BAFTA Award and won a Golden Globe for the role. Murray is a regular cast member of the Showtime soap opera Homeland (2012-2018), where he received two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for his portrayal of Dar Adal. Murray Murray describes himself as Syrian-American. Abraham was born on October 24, 1939 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Fahrid “Fred” Abraham, an automobile mechanic, and his wife Josephine. Murray’s father and family fled Muqlus, a Syrian Ottoman village in the Valley of the Christians, because of the famine in Mount Lebanon when he was 5 years old; Abraham’s grandfather was a priest of the Greek Orthodox Church in Antioch.
His mother, one of 14 children, is Italian-American and descended from an Italian immigrant who worked in the coal mines of western Pennsylvania.
