Katie Couric has been a household name as a celebrity host for decades.

She is a writer, mother, critical journalist and colon health advocate. She lost her first husband, Jay Monahan, to colon cancer in 1998, and has spoken openly about the loss in countless interviews and in her 2021 memoir. Going there.

Almost 15 years after Monahan’s death, Couric met her second husband, John Molner, and the two quickly fell in love. They were put together by a mutual friend in 2012, got engaged in 2013 and married in an intimate backyard ceremony the following year.

On the couple’s eighth wedding anniversary in 2022, Couric was diagnosed with breast cancer. She later revealed the diagnosis in a personal essay published in September 2022 and also shared that Molner “had a tumor the size of a coconut on his liver” removed just months before their 2014 wedding.

“I feel super lucky that it was diagnosed when it was,” Couric said on Today show. The journalist had a lumpectomy in July 2022 to remove a tumor the size of an olive, and two months later began radiation.

She previously told PEOPLE, “Cancer has had a huge impact on me personally, losing my husband, Jay, to colon cancer in 1998 and my sister, Emily, to pancreatic cancer two years later. I think the most powerless feeling you have is not being able to help someone you love beat this disease.”

He met Couric in 2012

Couric and Molner formed in 2012 after Couric asked a friend if she knew any doctors.

“In 2012 I was single again and I asked my friend Molly, whose husband is a trauma surgeon, if her husband knew any other doctors because I thought I would like to date a doctor,” Couric told PEOPLE in 2018

Although Molly said there weren’t any doctors she knew on the market, she did suggest a certain banker and passed along Couric’s number. Molner ended up calling Couric and asking her out. Couric later told PEOPLE, “What can I say, he greeted me.”

He and Couric married in 2014

Molner popped the question on the beach over Labor Day weekend 2013 and the two tied the knot in an intimate backyard wedding at Couric’s home in East Hampton, New York on June 21, 2014.

The couple had their children participate in the ceremony: Molner’s children, Allie and Henry, recited readings by EE Cummings and Maya Angelou; Couric’s daughter, Ellie, read Woodrow Wilson’s love letter to his wife; and her other daughter, Carrie, sang the Beatles song “I Will.”

Former Today host Savannah Guthrie said in 2014 Today show looks like Molner planned most of the wedding.

“It was very, very intimate and special,” Couric said. “I hate to be shallow, but the weather was perfect and the garden – it was in our backyard – and the garden looked beautiful. We had these amazing dahlias everywhere. It was just perfect.”

Couric and Molner celebrated nine years of marriage in June 2023. “Lucky, lucky me,” the journalist captioned a montage of photos with her husband on Instagram.

In a separate post on Instagram, Molner wrote: “9 years! What an adventure. Happy to have you in my life! Where to next?”

He worked in finance

Molner graduated from Trinity College and received an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He went on to work with Brown Brothers Harriman for more than 32 years, before retiring in 2014, and now works as a senior advisor at the financial firm.

In 2018, Molner and Couric co-founded Katie Couric Media, with Molner serving as CEO.

“I’ve worked on so many different networks and in so many different jobs and I think nowadays there’s so much content, so much information 24/7, and you’re just inundated with it. And there’s a lot of misinformation. … So I said ‘I want to create media company,'” Couric told Kelly Clarkson during a 2022 appearance. The Kelly Clarkson Show. “And I do that with my husband, John. He’s the CEO because I’m a more creative person — he’s a strong, smart, business man.”

He is the father

The banker has two children from a previous marriage, son Henry and daughter Allie.

On January 11, 2022, Molner posted a sweet birthday tribute to his son Henry along with a photo of the two of them with the caption: “Happy Birthday Hammer. Can’t believe you’re 27 and anyone who looks at the post with a story along with this – redacted pic of Henry’s driver’s license – will also question whether he’s really 27. But he is! Proud of you Ham. Big thanks to the great @barbutonyc team for making this celebration so special.”

On February 16, 2022, the proud dad posted a photo of him and his daughter Allie on Instagram with the caption, “Cheers for 24! Xoxo.”

His perfect weekend includes reading and cooking

In a 2020 feature for Katie Couric Media’s “Weekend Whats” series, Molner revealed some of his favorite weekend activities at the time.

According to Molner, his perfect weekend would be filled with digging into a good book (his word – Promised land Barack Obama) and watching television shows like stewardess, Queen’s Gambit, Crown and Cancellation.

His perfect weekend meal was Jonathan Waxman’s spaghetti carbonara from his cookbook, Barbuto cookbook. The financier also shared a podcast pitch, admitting he’s an “armcherry” and loves Dax Shepherd’s Armchair expert.

He supported Couric in writing her memoir

In an interview with Katie Couric Media, Molner revealed what the process was like when his wife wrote her memoir, Going there. Although Molner considers himself a private guy, he was enthusiastic about Couric’s memoir.

“I does consider yourself a private person. But Katie is a public person and likes to share her life. I had some concerns about what she would share,” he said. “But I also thought that in order to write an important book, she had to be willing to be authentic about her journey. And that’s what she did. There is no point in writing a book like this if you are not prepared to be honest with yourself. And I think she absolutely did.”

He said he’s proud of Couric and proud to be a part of her life, a character in her memoir and on her Instagram from time to time.

He likes golf

He is an avid golfer. Not only did he admit that while Couric was writing her memoir, he would dive into golf to give her the creative space she needed, but his Instagram feed is extremely golf-centric.

For his birthday in 2020, he visited Emerald Dunes Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Molner shared a shot of him and his friends on the course with the caption: “For my birthday my friend Josh made an albatross (2) on the par 5 11th hole. Odds on this— less than one in a million! Driver and 225 -yard 3- metal. In the hole… and he dedicated a shot to me for my birthday. He also got $20 for beating me in this match. Thanks Josh!”

And in September 2021, he posted a funny photo on Instagram of himself at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Briarcliff Manor, New York, lying on the grass, arms out to the sides and legs up on a bench with the caption, “Skins at Sleepy. I’m tired. But I also have 5 skins.” (Skins is a game played during golf where players compete for a prize or money on each hole, and each hole has a certain value. Winnings are called skins.)

He’s funny, Couric says

“I met an amazing person and I couldn’t be happier … he’s so great and puts up with me. I’m a total mess and he’s super hot and he calls me tornado,” Couric told Clarkson during an appearance on 2022. The Kelly Clarkson Show. Couric continued as her hubby posted a photo of her tube of toothpaste on Instagram, with the tube squeezed in the middle, then joked, “Why does she have seven toothbrushes?”

Couric told PEOPLE in May 2018, “John is so funny, he just has this incredibly dry and wry sense of humor, and he doesn’t take himself too seriously. He’s just really good company.”

Molner showed off his trademark sense of humor by poking fun at Couric in an Instagram post on Dec. 5, 2022. He shared a stylish photo of his wife posing at the White House in a pink dress that she accessorized with a tiny white purse. “Perfect, yes,” he wrote in the description. “But if she had carried a slightly larger purse, maybe I wouldn’t have had to cram lipstick, sunglasses and a phone into my tuxedo pocket?”

He and Couric attended the 2023 US Open

The pair were in the stands at the opening of the 2023 US Open in New York. Couric wore a chic floral dress, while Molner looked dapper in a gray plaid suit. During the evening, they mingled with a number of celebrities, including Lindsey Vonn and Danny DeVito. Couric called the date on Instagram “a beautiful night of tennis and friendship.”

He and Couric will become grandparents

In December 2023, Couric announced that her oldest daughter, Ellie Monahan—whom she welcomed with her late husband—was expecting her first child.

This will be Molner and Couric’s first grandchild.
