The whole idea of Congress removing someone from office sounds absurd. House Republicans may not succeed, but they certainly will try.
Elise Stefanik of New York, chair of the House Republican Conference, and Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia introduced two bills last week to “overturn” the two impeachments of Donald Trump, as we detailed last week. (The former president’s 2019 impeachment would essentially be overturned by Greene’s resolution, while Stefanik’s proposal would reverse his 2021 impeachment. Each Republican is a co-sponsor of the other’s bill.)
Undoubtedly, these unsophisticated tactics are often offered, but since they have little chance of success, they are usually easy to dismiss. However, the “expulsion” program received strong support a day after it began in earnest, according to the Associated Press.
The speaker of the House told reporters: “I think it’s appropriate.” Like I thought before, you should have kicked him out because it shouldn’t have happened.
For those who have just joined us, a quick recap: Trump first floated the idea of reversing what happened to him in early 2020, just two days after his first Senate impeachment trial ended. Should the Chamber’s accusation be rejected? Trump asked during a brief question-and-answer session with reporters. “They should, because it was a scam.”
Since there was a Democratic majority in the House at the time, several members of the Republican Party tried to promote the proposal in the previous Congress, but their efforts were ignored. However, when the current Congress began, McCarthy said that he was willing to consider the idea.
It seems that the speaker of the House of Representatives has finished searching and is ready to back down. (My MSNBC colleague Hayes Brown wrote an excellent article on how such a new method would work; it was posted this morning.) Furthermore, this is not the only action McCarthy is willing to take to appease his extreme right.
