Eric Montross was born into an athletic family on September 23, 1971 in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. His sports adventure began at Lawrence North High School, where he showed outstanding abilities. He later enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to join the Tar Heels. Furthermore, as a junior and senior, Montross was named an All-American and helped UNC win the NCAA Championship against Michigan in 1993.
