Laurie Metcalf is the daughter of James, director of budgeting at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and Libby, a librarian. She is the eldest of her two siblings, James and Linda. Metcalf was born in Carbondale, Illinois on June 16, 1955, but grew up in Edwardsville, Illinois. She graduated in 1976 from the University of Illinois.
