Career
Manny Machado began his professional career in 2012 when he was taken third overall by the Baltimore Orioles in the Major League Baseball draft. The following year, he won his first Gold Glove. On August 9, the Orioles promoted him from the double-A Bowie Baysox to the major leagues. He threw 50 shutouts and scored 24 runs near the season finale. In 2013, he led the first league with 25 doubles. On September 23, he injured his left knee after being hit hard. As a result, he decided to have surgery on his left knee to reduce the risk of future dislocations. He returned the following year after fully recovering from knee surgery.
On May 1, he swept the Pittsburgh Pirates in a doubleheader. In addition, he aggravated a right knee injury while preparing for a home game against the New York Yankees. Manny was initially diagnosed with a sprain, but the Baltimore Orioles revealed he would miss the rest of the season to undergo additional knee surgery. By June 2015, he was fully recovered and ready to start the 2015 season. In 2018, the Baltimore Orioles traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He collected 1,000 hits in his Dodgers debut (against the Milwaukee Brewers).
On February 21, 2019, he agreed to a ten-year, $300 million contract with the San Diego Padres. Initially, the contract was the largest free agent contract in American sports history. It was a surprise, however, two weeks later when the Philadelphia Phillies signed Bryce Harper to a 13-year, $330 million contract. In his first season in San Diego, he hit .256/.334/.462, with 32 home runs and 85 RBI. He also led the league with 24 groundout double plays.
