Margot Robbie quietly married British film producer Tom Ackerley in 2016.
The couple first met in 2013 on the set of the WWII drama Suite Française, where he was assistant director and she was in front of the camera. They started dating the following year.
The married couple now work side by side. In 2014, they co-founded a production company with friends Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr. LuckyChap Entertainment has produced several films and television series including I, Tonya, Birds of prey and Barbieall of which starred Robbie.
Robbie and Ackerley rarely speak publicly about their relationship, apart from the occasional mention in interviews, and lead a very private life. Until 2023, the couple rarely appeared together in public.
In May 2023, the couple were seen at the Chanel Cruise 2023/24 fashion show, and two months later, Ackerley was with Robbie at the world premiere Barbie movie.
Following the global Barbie press tour, the couple enjoyed a relaxing vacation in Greece, where they were spotted packing a handheld.

Before working behind the scenes on film sets, Ackerley got his start in the industry working as an extra on the first three films Harry Potter movies.
Robbie is a “huge” fan of the series and spent her 13th birthday drinking tea and reading one of the novels. In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live!Kimmel shared what Robbie called her “most embarrassing photo.”
“I’m having a cup of tea. I’m in bed. I’m obviously really enjoying reading Harry Potter,” she told Kimmel about the photo.
The actress also talked about her husband’s involvement in films during an appearance at the 2020 The Graham Norton Show. “My husband is in the Harry Potter movies. I know, I was like, ‘If you’d told me sooner, we’d be married very soon,'” Robbie joked. “But he was an extra when he was a little kid – he was one of the Slytherin extras when Draco pushes some kids out of the way to see Buckbeak in the third book. Pushes my husband out of the way.”
He works in the film industry
After a brief stint in front of the camera, Ackerley went on to study at Godalming College in the UK and later entered the film industry behind the scenes.
He began his career working as a floor manager and production assistant, before later working as an assistant director, according to the British Film Institute.

Ackerley met his future wife in 2013 while filming Suite Française, where he worked as the third assistant director. Robbie starred in the war-love movie opposite Michelle Williams. At the time, Robbie wasn’t looking for a relationship when “the hottest guy in London” caught her eye, she recalled. Vogue in 2016.
“I was the ultimate single girl. The idea of relationships made me want to throw up,” she said. “And then this crept up on me. We’ve been friends for so long. I’ve always had a crush on him, but I thought, Oh, he’ll never love me back. Don’t make it strange, Margot. Don’t be stupid and tell him you like him. And then it happened, and I said, of course we’re together. This makes so much sense, like nothing has ever made sense before.”
They got married in secret

In December 2016, Robbie and Ackerley married in a private ceremony on the Gold Coast in Australia. The couple did not publicly announce their engagement before the wedding.
Shortly after rumors circulated that the couple had exchanged vows, The Wolf of Wall Street the star confirmed the news with a cheeky post on Instagram, kissing her husband and showing off the ring on her hand.

The same year that Ackerley and Robbie started dating, they also went into business together. The pair were joined by Robbie’s childhood friend Sophia Kerr and Ackerley’s industry colleague Josey McNamara to create LuckyChap Entertainment in 2014.
The four lived together in a flat in London during the early days of their company, which produced award-winning films including I, Tonya, A promising young woman and Barbie.
Ackerley opened Filmmaker magazine in 2020 about their goal to make female-centric films and amplify new voices. “If we can be a company that nurtures new and emerging talent, and we can bring them in and provide that platform to make bigger movies and studio movies, that’s ideally what we want to do,” he said.
Robbie added: “It’s nice to be in business with people I already know we’re going to live with anyway.”
In November 2023, LuckyChap was awarded Producer of the Year by Robbie at DiversityPower of Women 2023 ceremony The actress, who lost her voice, asked Ackerley and McNamara to read her speech to the audience. Unbeknownst to them, Robbie has written some hilarious anecdotes.
“The three of us met on a film set in Belgium 10 years ago,” Ackerley said. “I was the third AD, Josey was the second AD, and Margot had a small supporting role.” McNamara interjected, “And a hideous wig.”
“Yeah. That wig was awful. She’s lucky I ended up marrying her,” Ackerley said with a laugh.
They postponed their honeymoon because of work I, Tonya
Instead of going on a honeymoon after the wedding, the newly married couple immediately went to work I, Tonya.
“We made this movie instead of our honeymoon. There were times when we were sitting in a car parked in Atlanta and coldly said to us, ‘We should be on the beach right now. We should be on our honeymoon. What are we doing?! ‘ Following our dream Robbie explained Extra in 2017.
After the movie was over, they had time to run away together. “We did it after we finished filming. It was great,” she said of their honeymoon in Tahiti.
Robbie later discussed their journey during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show 2018, as the newlyweds actually ran into Degeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi in Tahiti — along with former President Barack Obama.
The actress recounted the hilarious interaction, explaining how one rainy day she and Ackerley decided to go to the hotel gym and Ackerley threw on a pair of slightly revealing shorts. “I was like, ‘You can’t wear those shorts! They’re like… you know, I can see everything,'” Robbie recalled.
The pair thought the shorts would go unnoticed in the quiet gym — until they ran into Degeneres, de Rossi and the former president.
“Then we had to do all this as a stretching class, but meanwhile Tom is trying to like, not reveal anything, and he’s dying,” Robbie said. “The gym instructor keeps telling Tom, ‘Tom, step up! Step up! You’re not stepping up!’ and Tom tries to throw himself cross-legged.”
He helps Robbie deal with his nerves

Despite countless award nominations and critical acclaim, the Australian actress still faces self-doubt from time to time and turns to her husband for a boost of confidence.
“I’m always nervous to start any kind of work. I have this complete crisis of faith and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I’m not even good at acting and I can’t do this,'” she told Daily Mirror 2021 “Every time I do a movie, I turn to my husband and say, ‘I don’t think I can do this.’ He says something like, ‘Do it every time. You’ll be fine.’ ”
He is afraid of snakes
Ackerley might be able to help his wife with stage fright, but when it comes to things like wildlife, he turns to her for support.
Growing up in Australia, Bomb the actress is used to wild animals around her house, but her English husband doesn’t quite share her ability to stay calm in a similar situation. During the performance at The Late Late Show with James Cordenshe explained, “My husband hates snakes. He’s English. You obviously don’t have them in England, I suppose.”
The actress continued: “I live in LA and the other day there was a six-foot snake… in front of the kitchen, right in the garden. [Ackerley] almost had a coronary. He said: ‘What should we do?! Shall we kill him?!’ And I said, ‘Y— no, we’re not killing it. Just gently tell him to go somewhere else.’ ”

In June 2023, the cast Barbie traveled all over the world to promote the film. Ackerley, the film’s producer, appeared on the red carpet with Robbie in Korea, Australia and Los Angeles.
