Pedro’s full name is Pedro Jaime Martinez. On October 25, 1971, he was born in Manoguayab, a small suburb of Santo Domingo. He was the fifth child in a family of six. Growing up was difficult because it was difficult to meet basic needs. His father, Pablo Jaime, did not have a permanent job and had to rely on odd jobs to support his family. His mother was no better when she worked as a housewife in rich families. As a teenager, Martinez worked as a mechanic to support his parents.

Martinez’s baseball career began in 1988 when he signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he played for five seasons. He made his MLB debut on September 24, 1992, and made his first start six days later in a 3–1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. He was traded to the Montreal Expos before the start of the 1994 season as the Dodgers were desperate for a second baseman. As one of the Montreal Expos’ best pitchers, his minutes have increased.
