Altman joined the Cavaliers in 2012, spending nearly four years in the front office before becoming the team’s director of pro personnel. Later in the 2016-2017 season, he became the club’s deputy general manager. Koby finally became the club’s general manager in 2017. After that, he was one of only four African-American general managers in the league. Similarly, he became one of the few GMs from the Jewish community.

As previously stated, the basketball director is married to Rachel Garson. Rachel Emily Garson was born in Ohio to parents Marci and Brent. Garson was born and raised in Orange, Ohio, and attended Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland to study nursing. During the announcement of her engagement to Koby Altman, she was still working as a registered nurse at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital.
It is not known how the two met, but media reports say Koby proposed to her after dating for years after his 35th birthday in September 2017. Sophie Jane Altman, their daughter, was born in December 2017 and was diagnosed with gastroschisis while was still in her mother’s womb. However, she has fully recovered and is currently in excellent health. Rachel and Koby were married in Cleveland in August 2018 in front of their friends and family. Altman’s family and early career
Koby Altman was born to his mother Deborah Altman on September 16, 1982 in Brooklyn, New York. He was her one and only child. Deborah, his mother, was a social worker who worked at Sheepshead Bay High School. Altman was raised by his mother as a single parent since his father was absent from his life when he was young. His family belonged to the lower middle class, but his mother never made him feel deprived of anything.
According to Altman, Deborah was a caring, powerful and independent woman who taught him everything she knew, including basketball. Deborah, a graduate of the University of North Carolina, has been in love with basketball since college and became a fan of the New York Knicks. Koby inherited his mother’s passion for games and started playing basketball at a young age. Koby attended Middlebury College after graduating in 1999, where he was a point guard on the basketball team. However, he never played professional basketball.
He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Amherst College in 2007. Altman also coached at two other institutions, Southern Illinois (2009-2010) and Columbia (2010-2012), before joining the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2012.
