According to Richard, his mother was physically abusive, so he began comedy to distract her and keep her from abusing him.

Belzer finished his education at Fairfield Warde High School. After finishing his education, he worked as a reporter for the Bridgeport Post for a few months. Then he enrolls in Dean Junior College, which is located in Franklin. Richard, on the other hand, was fired from the school after a few months. Belzer then worked in a variety of jobs, including census taker and salesman.
