Roger Penske was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio on February 20, 1937 to a businessman father. Perhaps his father influenced his business acumen from an early age. He dropped out of Lehigh University, started customizing used cars and started selling them for a profit.
Roger Penske managed to sell 32 cars in a ten-year period starting in 1958. During this period he began racing, and by 1960 he was well known as a racing figure. He achieved a series of victories. He participated in two Formula 1 Grand Prix events in 1963 and also won the NASCAR Pacific Coast Late Model Race. In order to focus on his business affairs, he raced for two more years before retiring from professional auto racing in 1965.

In 1973, the team earned its first NASCAR victory. He collected the most victories as an owner at the Indianapolis 500 race (16 victories). He acquired a stake in the Dick Johnson Racing Team in 2015, which later changed its name to DJR Team Penske.
