Swami Shivapremananda Biography
Swami Shivapremananda was born on July 26, 1925, and died in 2019 at the age of 94. He was born and reared in Berhampore, West Bengal, India, to a rich family. Suhendu Ranjan Ray was his given name at birth. Swami Shivapremananda is from an aristocratic family in Berhampor, West Bengal, India. He was of Indian origin and followed the Hindu faith. His father, Sudhendu Ranjan Ray, was a teacher by profession, while his mother, Swarnalata, was from a rich family of silk merchants.
He had always been a good student, and after high school, he planned to work in the government, but destiny had different ideas for him. When he was young, he traveled to Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, to see his hero, Swami Sivananda.
Career
Swami Shivapremananda began his career as a devoted disciple of Swami Sivananda. He studied yoga, comparative religions, and philosophy with him for about 16 years. He was also Swami Sivananda’s personal secretary. Following that, he began teaching yoga at the Yoga Vedanta Forest Academy in Rishikesh, as well as writing articles for Divine Life and Wisdom Light monthly publications.
He also took involved in numerous humanitarian issues via the Sivananda Eyes Relief camps and toured Himalayan and Tibetan temples. He became the director of the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre in Milwaukee and later in New York in 1961.
Following that, he traveled to other nations and built Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers in locations such as Buenos Aires, Montevideo, and Santiago. He has authored a number of publications, including “Step by Step Yoga for Stress Relief,” “An Insight into Yoga,” and “Vaincre Le Stress Par Le Yoga.”
