Terence Allan Crawford was born in Omaha, Nebraska on September 28, 1987 to Terry and Debbie Crawford. Shawntay and Latisha are his two sisters. Terence became interested in boxing at an early age, and started training at the age of seven. He lost only 12 times out of 70 amateur fights. He even defeated Mikey and Danny Garcia as amateurs, both of whom are now world champions.
Because of his three victories in amateur tournaments, he was the first in the American lightweight division. However, his Olympic career suffered due to defeats by Saddam Ali and others. Terence Crawford officially made his professional boxing debut on March 14, 2008. He fought Brian Cummings and knocked him out in the first round. His first 10-round match was against Breidis Prescott.
On August 21, 2013, he faced Russian boxer Andrey Klimov, the all-time champion, and defeated him by unanimous decision. He then faced Ricky Burns on March 1, 2014 for the WBO lightweight title. He triumphed against a thirty-year-old fighter, winning his first world title.
His second championship defense took place on June 28, 2014, in his home state of Nebraska, against Olympic gold medalist Yuriorkis Gamboa. Terence won by TKO after knocking out his opponent three times in the sixth round. He still thinks of the fight as the hardest fight he’s ever had.
