A Tom Horn film
Steve McQueen stars as famed cop, outlaw, and gunslinger Tom Horn in William Wiard’s 1980 American western film Tom Horn. Based on Horn’s personal records
Tom Horn, the famed tracker and explorer who helped capture Geronimo, wanders the fast-disappearing western frontier. He taunts boxer Jim Corbett as he rides into a small town at the beginning of the story, and Corbett ends up unconscious and badly injured in the stables.
Horn confronts the cowboys whose cattle are Coble-branded at the auction, calling himself “Detective Berzon” and asking them why their cattle are Coble-branded. He gives them fair warning and then launches a solo crusade to kill or banish anyone who bothers his patrons’ cattle.
Horn uses tough but successful tactics. After a public shooting, the locals are concerned about his aggressive tendencies and feelings turn against him. The owners of large cattle companies begin to hatch plans to kill him because they realize that even though he is doing exactly what he was paid to do, his methods would end up damaging his reputation. For the same reasons, Joe Belle, who is interested in politics, wants Horn out of the way. When a young man herding sheep is shot with a .45-60 rifle, the same caliber wielded by Tom Horn, his plot is set into motion.
It takes a while for Horn to realize that he has been tricked. He will not leave the district or go far from the city because he is sure and proud of his innocence. Coble and Glendolene try to warn him, but Horn ignores them. Joe Belle forces Horn out of the pub and into his office, where the man is secretly recording his conversation in an adjoining room. Although he denies responsibility for the murders, Horn claims that “if I shot that boy, it was the best shot I’ve ever taken.” Horn was captured after this conversation.
Horn looks confused, not used to not being able to get in and out of his favorite hills as he pleases. He tries to escape from prison by escaping. Based on the testimony of a journalist, who distorted the debate between Belle and Horn, he was recaptured and found guilty.
