Tony Cox was born on March 31, 1957 in Uniontown, Alabama. He is the son of Henrietta Cox-Penn and Joe Cox, and grew up in Uniontown with his grandparents, Lottie and Henry Jones. His stepfather, Rudolph (Rudy) Penn, lives in College Park, Georgia with Tony’s mother.
After graduating high school, Cox enrolled at Alabama State University to study music. “I was playing by ear,” Cox admitted in an interview with Jet magazine in 2003. It was exactly the same as in Drumline. I competed against some school drummers who had nothing on.

Cox decided to pursue acting after seeing Billy Barty, a small man who was also the founder of the group Little People of America. Little People of America (LPA) is a non-profit organization that provides support, resources and information to people with dwarfism and their families. He moved to Los Angeles when he was 18 years old, encouraged by relatives and friends. He began acting classes at the Merrick Studio acting school with screenwriter De De Tillman and quickly found work in commercials, films and television.
He is best known for his roles in Bad Santa, where he played Marcus, the mastermind behind the safe-breaking duo, and Date Movie, where he played the Hitch parody of Dr. Hitch. Professional robbers Willie T. Soke (Billy Bob Thornton) and his dwarf assistant Marcus Skidmore (Tony Cox) are hired every year as Santas in department stores, and Marcus is hired as an elf, but they rob malls at night, with Marcus’ wife Lois (Lauren Tom) as their getaway driver in Bad Santa. Marcus takes his elf duties seriously, but Willie, a sex-addicted alcoholic, gradually loses his ability to perform with children, which affects his safe-breaking abilities, much to Marcus’ chagrin.
While working at the Saguaro Square Mall in Phoenix, Willie’s obscenity shocks the mall’s prudish manager Bob Chipeska (John Ritter), who brings them to the attention of security chief Gino Slagel (Bernie Mac). Cox also appeared in the Farrelly brothers’ film Me, Myself, and Irene as the limousine driver of a Mensa International member who kidnaps Jim Carrey’s wife. In the film, Charlie, a Rhode Island state trooper, experiences a mental breakdown, which results in the emergence of another personality, Hank.
