Biography of Valerie Jarrett
Valerie June Bowman was born on June 14, 1956 in Shiraz, Iran to James E. Bowman and Barbara T. Bowman. In 1956, her father, a pathologist and geneticist, ran a children’s hospital in Shiraz. Her family was forced to move to London when she was five, and her parents are of European and American descent.
Jarrett primarily spoke Persian, French and English as a child. Her mother was one of four advocates who founded the Erikson Institute in 1966 to provide collective knowledge about child development to teachers and other professionals who work with young children.
Jarrett graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon High School in 1974 and earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stanford University in 1978. As if that wasn’t enough, she went on to earn her juris doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School.
