Walter Marvin Koenig was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 14, 1936. He is the son of Sarah and Isadore Koenig. His father was a businessman, and the family eventually moved to Manhattan. After graduating from high school, he enrolled at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. He later transferred to UCLA to major in psychology. The actor also studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre.
