Meet William Tongi, the 18-year-old contestant of American Idol 2023.
William “Guy” Tongi, 18, is of Tonga/Samoan/Irish descent and was born on September 1, 2004 in Kahuku, Hawaii to Rodney Guy and Lillie N Rodney Tongi. Teens have a unique blend of musical abilities that few can match. Although it is very early, the American Idol candidate has released the song Dreams in 2020, which he wrote specifically for his sister’s wedding. His sister tells him about her and her current husband, then her fiancé, and turns it into a wonderful love song.
Tongi graduated from Decatur High School in Washington State. He became interested in music after learning the ukulele from his teacher in fifth grade. William then took his guitar and started playing. While singer/songwriter Lauren Gruwell describes his music as a mix of country and alternative, she believes fans often associate it with the island. Tongi also plays guitar and ukulele.
On Tiktok and Instagram, Tongi regularly posts covers of songs. His profile has received over 500,000 likes and he has over 77,000 followers on TikTok. Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” and Vince Gill’s “Look at Us” are among the songs he has covered. According to the preface to his 2020 appearance on the Rikishi Driver Talk Show, William believes music helps him focus and he has ADHD.
According to William’s social media profiles, a major influence on his musical interests is his father Rodney, who passed away at the end of 2021 at the age of 50. William said his father was a musician. William is the youngest of his siblings, along with sisters Cassandra Alvina and Leilei Tongi and brother Leorod Tongi.
While on American Idol, William described how he coped with pain and how his father’s hand introduced him to music. At her audition, Tongi sang “Monster,” a song that musician James Blunt wrote for his father. The judges were moved by Tongi’s performance.

The nationwide search for the next version of the series began with auditions in Las Vegas, Nashville and New Orleans, where hopefuls battled for a chance to attend Hollywood Week. Ryan Seacrest, Emmy-winning host of American Idol Season 21, pointed out that the season will be “really great” and will feature many contestants who are truly dedicated to their work.
Before the show debuted, Idol released an introductory video of one of those contestants, 16-year-old Haven Madison. Her father, a singer in a Christian band, raised her in a travel van. He played guitar during her interview. Her performance of the original song “Fifteen” was a risky move.
Platinum seats for the show are expected to be available again. Judges will issue platinum tickets at each audition location. During Hollywood Week, the candidate is assigned a position and has the right to watch the performance of other candidates to choose the best duet. Season 21 of American Idol begins on ABC on Sunday, February 19, at 8:00 p.m. ET. New episodes will be available on Hulu the day after they air on ABC at 3 a.m. ET.
