Whoopi Goldberg Explains Why Marriage Has Not Worked for Her: 'I Don't Care How You Feel'

Whoopi Goldberg got out of marriage.

Goldberg, 68, appeared on the May 10 episode Who is talking to Chris Wallace? on MAX to promote her new memoir Pieces: My mother, my brother and me. When host Wallace asked the EGOT winner about her three past marriages, Goldberg admitted that she just doesn’t have the energy for such a relationship.

“No, I don’t want to,” she said after asking Wallace, 76, if he didn’t want to “participate” in the marriage. “I don’t care how you feel. It’s horrible,” she said with a laugh. “You know, when you’re married to someone, you have to be invested in how they feel.”

“I didn’t,” she continued. “I’m invested in my child. I’m invested in her children. I’m invested in my son-in-law. I’m invested in my friends. But I’m not invested in a relationship that would require as much as having a child requires and I know that’s not for me.”

Goldberg was married three times. Her marriage to her first husband, Alvin Martin, ended in divorce in 1979; the two have a daughter, Alexandrea, 49. In 1986, Goldberg married cinematographer David Claessen; they divorced two years later. She later married Lyle Trachtenberg in 1994; the couple separated the following year.

While talking about her views on relationships, Goldberg told Wallace that she’s “not against hit and runs.”

“I know you shouldn’t say that, but I think you have to because not everyone is meant for marriage,” she added. “But a lot of people enjoy, you know, sex. So a little hit and run sometimes isn’t bad.”

I wanted to feel normal and it seemed to me that I would have a more normal life if I was married, she said, why she tried marriage in the past. “But obviously that’s not the case, that’s not a good reason to get married. You have to actually want life with someone through the ups and downs, and I’ve just discovered that’s not for me.”

Goldberg then said that she once fell in love, but she did not want to specify with whom.

“What I know now is that I don’t want to live with anybody. I think I tried probably the right guys for other people. It wasn’t them; it was me. I actually like living alone,” she told CNN.
