Why Billie Eilish Says the Most 'Frustrating' Thing About Fame Is That 'You Can't Defend and Explain Yourself'

Billie Eilish continues to speak publicly about the difficulties of growing up.

The Grammy winner recently spoke with Lana Del Rey for Interview magazine, and the 22-year-old singer shared the “frustrating” elements of growing up in the public eye.

Eilish burst onto the scene when she was 14 with her hit single “Ocean Eyes”, and two years later she released her EP Don’t smile at me; and shortly after her debut album When we all fall asleep, where do we go? 2019 and won three Grammys for the album itself.

And since she released her third album Hit me hard and soft May, the two-time Oscar winner has continued to flourish, showing her personal and professional growth over the years.

“It’s so strange to grow up and change in front of the world,” she admitted. “The craziest part is discovering things about yourself and then suddenly, everyone else knows and I don’t even have a second to think about how it makes me feel.”

“That’s hard,” he replied Del Rey, 38, and Eilish added candidly, “It’s very frustrating.”

“The only good thing I can tell you is that I was able to use some of the things I heard people say about me to my advantage later on,” he revealed. Norman F—ing Rockwell a singer. “Some of that information was useful, but most of it wasn’t.”

She continued: “I almost feel like I’ve grown up in front of the world too, because it doesn’t matter when you get famous, you’re going to grow up all over again. It is a kind of rebirth.”

“It really is,” confirmed Eilish.

As the “Video Games” singer continued, she noted how her evolution was more like an “execution” before asserting that Eilish “literally grew up in front of the whole world.”

“What’s frustrating and gives me a lot of anxiety is feeling like I have to explain myself all the time,” Eilish shared. “There are so many hard parts about being famous, but one of the most frustrating things is not being able to defend yourself or explain yourself.”

She continued, “I say, ‘Dude, imagine if everyone in the world heard a rumor about you, and it’s either not true or it’s been explained out of context.’ And my desire and need to explain myself, I found to be extremely harmful to my life and my sense of self.”

The young singer explained that if she hits “the point of frustration and ends up explaining [herself]it just got worse.”

“It made me prematurely declare things that I didn’t even feel safe or comfortable knowing about myself. And all of a sudden, I’m saying them in public, and everyone’s like, ‘Oh, that’s her.’ And I’m like, ‘You make me feel like I’m not allowed to grow and change,'” she added before concluding, “It’s so freaking scary, because it’s all set in stone.”
