Why Coldplay Almost Missed Their First Glastonbury Set

Coldplay look back on the early days of their career.

The band looked back on their 1999 Glastonbury debut in a new BBC documentary Coldplay: Our Glastonbury.

Lead vocalist Chris Martin, 47, said they almost missed their chance to perform after the tour manager dropped them off at the wrong entrance shortly before they were due on stage, according to NME.

“The desire to go there was so great,” the “Fix You” singer said in the documentary. “Our first introduction, I think, was probably carrying a not-so-good amp with a drunk tour manager who, you know, obviously didn’t know what he was doing.”

The band released their first EP in 1998 and were due to appear at a music festival before recording their second EP – which was released in October 1999.

“We kind of went around the whole place very quickly, and then headed to where you should start, which is in the New Bands tent, first,” continued Martin. “I don’t think I was thinking about the bigger picture, how wild it was. It was like we were here and we were late, and that’s huge.”

Now Coldplay are preparing to headline Glastonbury for the fifth time on Saturday, June 29. The performance will be broadcast live globally from 16:45 to 18:45 ET on the BBC website.

Earlier this month, the seven-time Grammy Award-winning band announced that their 10th studio album, Music of the moonwill be published on Friday, October 4. The upcoming 11-track LP, produced by collaborator and Swedish hitmaker Max Martin, will have limited hand-signed, eco-friendly vinyl editions that fans will be able to order through the band’s website.

Coldplay are currently on a world tour and will be sold out in Rome; Dusseldorf, Germany; and Helenski after their festival performance.

In May, the band made headlines for a special interaction between Martin and a fan named Saundra Glenn as she struggled to get to their concert at Luton’s Stockwood Park in England.

In an interview with the BBC, Glenn, who lives with osteoarthritis and a “crippling right hip”, said she was walking to the till when she took a break and rested by the fence. At the time, she thought about turning around and watching the concert from home. Then a black Mercedes approached her in which the woman asked if she needed a ride.

The door opened and I said, ‘Oh, it’s Chris Martin, I can’t go in with him,'” Glenn recalled. However, others in the vehicle assured her: “‘Yes, you can’.”

Glenn wrote on social media about the interaction: “What a decent guy ❤️. We had a nice chat too.”
