Giada De Laurentiis and her 16-year-old daughter Jade may share similarities — but the celebrity chef doesn’t consider her only child a “mini me.”
The daughter of a Food Network alum is gifted in the art department. She sings with her band (which her mom proudly promotes) and performs in musicals and plays. Singing is not a trait that De Laurentiis passed on, she says.
“It’s crazy because neither her dad nor I sing,” the chef told PEOPLE of her ex-husband Todd Thompson. “No one in my family sings. I mean, we all like music, but not like this. Maybe in the shower. I’m always speechless when it comes to Jade and her music, because she can write music.”
Jade taught herself to play the keyboard during the pandemic, and is currently teaching herself to play the guitar, says De Laurentiis (54), who will publish her new cookbook. Super-Italian in March 2025.
“I don’t have that gift, so I’m just in awe of her will and her openness to teach herself these instruments that are just beyond me,” she says. “I don’t play the piano. I don’t play any instrument. That’s really sad, but I don’t. It wasn’t something my parents emphasized, and I never asked for it.”

The proud mom says she’s “really impressed” with Jade’s musical ability and can’t wait to find out what path the high school student will take when she graduates. “I’m really, really fascinated to watch her because she’s nothing like me. I know everyone says, ‘She’s like little you,’ but she’s not.”
In September, De Laurentiis shared a video of Jade singing lead vocals outdoors in Los Angeles with her band Hours. She was accompanied by guitarists and a drummer. Fans were clearly impressed with Jade’s vocal abilities.
“I have no idea Jade sang. 😍,” read one comment. “Omg Jade is an amazing singer!” read the second one.

It wasn’t the first time De Laurentiis expressed pride in her daughter’s performance.
In 2022, she shared a video of Jade starring in her school’s production Musical Matilda. And in 2023, De Laurentiis and Thompson posted photos of their daughter on the show i work.
“#proudparents,” captioned a joint Instagram post of the family smiling as Jade holds a bouquet of flowers.
They also posted pictures from Jade’s theater camp performance in July. “I’m so proud of our girl and it’s so special to watch her do what she loves,” De Laurentiis said.
