British writer and series creator Armando Iannucci is best known in the US for his political satire “Veep”. He then returned to HBO with the sci-fi comedy “Avenue 5”, which ran for two seasons before being cancelled.
The main reason for the cancellation of “Avenija 5” was the expiration of the contract with the performers. Under the normal schedule, the contracts will extend beyond the second season; however, the pandemic caused the production of Season 2 to be delayed by 18 months. Season 1 premiered in January 2020, with a subsequent extension in February 2020. However, Season 2 began filming in August 2021 and did not air until October 2022, more than two year after the film was released.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Iannucci noted that the pandemic caused unforeseen delays in the production of Season 2, causing the contract to expire. He added that HBO won’t renew the series until the upcoming season is at least close to its premiere date. Since HBO isn’t committed, it wouldn’t be fair to renew the performers’ contracts, potentially preventing them from joining other projects they might be in. Sam Iannucci is piloting a new HBO series called “The Franchise,” a parody of superhero filmmaking with Sam Mendes as experimental producer and director.
Armando Iannucci went on to say that despite the cancellation, everyone involved in “Avenue 5” is eagerly waiting for it to continue, including HBO. More seasons will depend on everyone’s scheduling, but Iannucci already has an idea of where he wants the show to go next.
In an interview with Collider, Hugh Laurie, who plays Captain Ryan Clark, also spoke positively about his time on “Avenue 5.” He said that the show gave him the opportunity to do things that he couldn’t do in other shows. Laurie added that the gig’s environment also allows performers to come up with their own ideas and try new things, something Iannucci encourages. “Most of my games fail miserably, but I’ve tried a lot and I love playing this game. It’s been a pleasure to be in this game,” he said.
Iannucci added that the cast that contributed to the series was not in the script, pointing to a specific moment in Season 2, Episode 3 when Ryan made it clear that the idea was bad. He went on to say that he likes to have a script ready so he has something to lean on, but enjoys seeing what else the performers can cook up.
“People need to feel comfortable trying things on, knowing that if it lands on their face, it won’t show,” says Iannucci.
