Keri Russell just revealed a big fashion detail about her Diplomat character.
On Sunday, October 20, the actress, 48, was at a panel at PaleyFest in New York City ahead of the release of Season 2 of the hit Netflix series, and shared that her character wears “the same black suit” in her upcoming sequel that was featured in the debut season of the series.
“Her clothes and knowledge, I love all of that,” Russell said of her political character Kate. “It’s been three years, and I’m still wearing the same black suit. Sometimes I change the color of my shirt, but I’m wearing the same black suit, and—dammit—I love it.”
The star of the series stated that the style decision was deliberate because when one has such basic pieces in one’s wardrobe “it is free to think about other things”.

“I think maybe men have this more than women, but I love dressing up too. I love all that stuff, and the power of clothes and fashion and all that,” she said. “But when you’re in uniform, you’re not thinking – you’re not spending mental time thinking about anything other than what you want to focus on.”
“That’s true freedom,” she continued. – And I really appreciate that.
In 2023, show costume designer Roland Sanchez spoke with IndieWire about Kate’s big fashion moment in the first season, in which the prominent character swapped her signature black suit for a red formal dress while attending a gala.

Sanchez said the decision was made by showrunner Debora Cahn. “Red was always in Deborah’s script,” said the designer. “Debora laid it all out. She’s very coordinated. She’s very costume-oriented and there are reasons why she does things for those characters.”

In the political thriller, which premiered on the streamer in 2023, Russell plays U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom Kate Wyler, who, along with her husband Hal Wyler, becomes involved in international affairs in an attempt to prevent global war.
The synopsis for Season 2 reads: “A deadly explosion in the heart of London shatters US Ambassador Kate Wyler’s world. Struggling to rebuild shattered lives and a shattered team, Kate’s worst fears are revealed: the attack that brought her to the UK has not come from a rival nation, he came from the British government.”

Along with Russell and Rufus Sewell, who play Hal, the series stars Ali Ahn, Ato Essandoh and David Gyasi, who were all at the Paley Center event with Cahn. Additionally, Emmy winner Allison Janney will join the cast in season two in an anticipated guest appearance as Vice President Grace Penn.
Russell shared with PEOPLE at the PaleyFest event that she “was a little nervous” to star opposite Janney, “just because she’s great and so good.”
2nd season Diplomat premieres Thursday, October 31 on Netflix.
