Why Richard Gere Is Moving to Spain for a 'Great Adventure' with Wife Alejandra Silva and Their Kids

Richard Gere recently said goodbye to part of his life in the US, six months after he first revealed his desire to move to Spain.

The A beautiful woman The actor, 75, sold his $11 million home in New Canaan, Connecticut, in October, property records confirmed, marking another milestone in his transition to spending more time outside of America.

News of the sale comes after he said Vanity Fair Spain in April that he plans to move to his wife Alejandra Silva’s home country to allow her to be closer to her relatives.

“It will be wonderful for Alejandra to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends and her culture,” he said of Silva, 41, “She was very generous in giving me six years of life in my world, so it’s only fair to give her at least six more to live in it,”

PEOPLE’s 1999 Sexiest Man Alive described his dream life in Madrid as “a big adventure because I’ve never lived full-time outside of the United States.” He will move with his wife and sons Alexander (5) and James (4).

Silva also has a son Albert, 11, with ex-husband Govinda Friedland. And Gere is also the father of a son, Homer (24), who he shares with his second wife, Carey Lowell. (Gere proudly said that Homer lives in New York and is “the lead singer of a punk band.”)

“I love Spain and I think your lifestyle is fantastic,” Gere said VF Spain. “Also your ability to live life conveying joy and happiness. It’s a beautiful place, the food is outstanding, and the people exude sensitivity and generosity, as well as a strong will to laugh and enjoy.”

Despite letting his Connecticut property go, Gere will be traveling back and forth in the US. When that article was published in April 2024, the actor and philanthropist said he had a house “in the country near New York,” so he would still have a base here.

However, Gere has no interest in putting down roots in Los Angeles. “When I hear the word Hollywood, the first thing I think is that it’s something very foreign to me,” he shared with the outlet. “I haven’t lived in California for a quarter of a century, nor have I shot a movie in Los Angeles during that period.”

Gere and Silva first met in 2014 at the celebrity-favorite Hotel Treville in Positano, Italy. They got married in 2018 and expressed their desire to have a family together.

A source close to the couple told PEOPLE at the time of their 2018 wedding that the two were “unbelievably happy,” adding, “They are so comfortable with each other, having fun together, and looking forward to their future together.”

Silva often shares updates from their life on Instagram.

In September, she congratulated her husband on his 75th birthday. “After 11 amazing years together, we still feel like the day we first met,” she wrote. “The journey we’ve shared, the beautiful family we’ve built and the memories we’ve made are more than I could have ever dreamed. You make my life better in every way and I am very grateful to have you by my side.”

Silva added: “I wish you many more years of love, laughter and happiness together. With all my love, Al.”
