There have been many sitcoms about a group of friends finding love in the Big City, but none have had the same traction as ABC’s “Happy Ending.” (Sorry, “Friends.”) Set in the often underrepresented city of Chicago, the series is a refreshing take on the genre. After the free-spirited Alex (Elisha Cuthbert) throws Dave (Zachary Knighton) at the altar for a boy inline skating, their group of friends must assess how their core motivations can survive. The series made Damon Wayans Jr. leaving “New Girl” is a great review of others of its kind before the cancellation of its potential end. And for those who want to understand how such a gem can fall by the side of the road, it’s gone. When ABC boss Paul Lee was asked about the decision, he gave a rather disgruntled response.
“What we found was [“Happy Endings”] it is simply too narrow. It was a very difficult decision because, as you know, I loved the show and it was very difficult for me to make that decision,” he said. Given that she’s had the closest experience with women on the show, Penny deserves the best, which makes the cancellation particularly painful.
