Why Zooey Deschanel Thought Jonathan Scott Ghosted Her When They First Started Dating (Exclusive)

The newly engaged couple opened up to PEOPLE about their romance in this week’s cover story

Jonathan Scott talks candidly about the time his fiancee Zooey Deschanel thought their relationship was potentially over.

The Property Brothers host, 45, i New girl alum, 43 — who got engaged in August — tell PEOPLE in this week’s cover story about their relationship and how they interacted with each other every day, except for one time when Scott was hiking.

“We talked or texted every day, I think, and still do every day since we met, except [time] I went on a hike in the middle of the Rockies, where there was no cell phone,” Scott told PEOPLE exclusively.

“She thought I was just firing her because I didn’t answer for, like, three days or something?” he says of Deschanel, who follows up with, “Uh-huh.”

Scott, however, says his bride-to-be received “the first text I sent when I got out of the mountains,” and details, “I took a video of the song she sent me and I showed it to the Rockies and everything. And then we literally talked every day since.”

Scott and Deschanel met on the set of an episode Karaoke in a carpool — during which they sang a mash-up of “Baby It’s Cold Outside” (famously performed by Deschanel in Dwarf) and “Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears, and their first date was in an escape room, one of Scott’s favorite activities.

The HGTV star later said “I love you” for the first time while taking part in a show at the Magic Castle in LA, the illusionist’s members-only club that Scott belongs to.

Both Deschanel and Scott were already married, and she has two children: Elsie (8) and Charlie (6) with her ex-husband, producer Jacob Pechenik. Scott happily declared himself a “bonus dad,” explaining, “They have even more people who love them.”

“Our family is very deep rooted and very blended,” adds Deschanel.

During a chat with PEOPLE at their new home in Los Angeles, which marked their first interview since their surprise engagement, Scott and Deschanel continued to talk about how they were made for each other.

“Our personalities are so compatible. It’s just that we’re from different worlds,” says Deschanel. “We identify as geeks, we want you to know.”
