They called the couple’s daughter, who arrived on Saturday to find both parents and their pet cocker spaniel, May, dead from “serious wounds”.

Neighbors told Sun that she claimed her parents were killed.

Officers were called and cordoned off the house in the suburb of Trowbridge and launched an investigation into their “sudden deaths”.

Their first neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “They were just wonderful people.

“He was a judge many years ago. I knew them for 38 years. They were good neighbors and really good friends.

“We got along well. They were really good when my wife died 18 months ago.

“He was a neighborhood watchman and collected trash on the street

“We knew something was wrong because we all look out for each other in this little block here.

“We noticed something strange that the curtains were not open and that was it.

“We were able to get hold of their daughter and she got in and got in.”

Today, police tape surrounds the £200,000 property, while uniformed officers manned positions outside.

Three bouquets of flowers with expressions of sympathy were laid outside the driveway of the house where retired welder Mr Jefferies’ blue Renault van remains.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: “An investigation has been launched following the sudden death of two people at a property in Trowbridge, Cardiff.

“Emergency services were called to a house in Morfa Crescent at around 2.50pm on Saturday.

“We thank the local community for their patience and understanding while the cordons are in place.”

The couple, both around 70 years old, according to neighbors, had two adult children, a son and a daughter.

Mr Jefferies was a retired council worker and a former Welsh Rugby Union referee and assessor.

The couple had a plot of land nearby where they grew vegetables and Mrs Jefferies continued to help her husband weed despite her failing health.

Another local resident, who did not want to be named, said: “They were a nice, quiet couple who always waved when they passed me in their van.

“Jaffa got injured playing rugby when he was around 20 years old and started refereeing and then became an official evaluator looking at the performance of other referees.

“He was a very good player in the game and only retired five years ago. He worked for the municipality as a welder repairing bus shelters across the street

“My son was in the street when the emergency services arrived on Saturday afternoon, he said the police were everywhere but they stopped them when they realized the situation.”

The couple had two dogs that they would walk two or three times a day, but one recently died.
