WWE reportedly wants to take Judgement Day in a different direction, and the group’s new leader, Finn Balor, could reprise The Demon character as a result. It’s been quite some time since audiences have seen that version of The Prince, but it makes sense in this new context.
On the June 6 edition of Monday Night Raw, WWE swerved fans in a very real way. Edge had only been the leader of Judgement Day since the Raw after WrestleMania 38, and it seemed like touches were still being added to the group on a weekly basis. Yet when Balor came out to join the faction, they turned on Edge, effectively pivoting him face and making Finn one of the top heels in the company.
According to a recent report from Fightful Select, WWE wants to turn Judgement Day into a more “supernatural group,” which, apparently “Edge was said to have been opposed to.” It’s unclear if this is why he was swapped out for Balor, but Fightful was also able to confirm a report that Edge is now being listed internally as a babyface. Fans need to read the tea leaves a bit here, as there’s been no notion that Balor is set to bring back The Demon. Yet if the idea is to take Judgement Day in a more esoteric direction, then Balor donning the facepaint again and revisiting that persona makes sense.
If WWE decided to go that route, it seems likely that The Demon’s presentation would be changed in some capacity. It’s tough to imagine audiences booing during Balor’s electric entrance, no matter how dastardly he’d been leading up to the match. In storyline, The Demon is the part of himself that Finn tries to keep locked away and only taps into it when taking on the likes of Brock Lesnar and Bobby Lashley. In a way, that’s what Edge’s vision for Judgement Day had been. To create a stable of wrestlers who were tired of not doing things their way and losing anyway.
It’s been a while since Balor was involved in main-event level feuds, but that could change now that he’s the leader of this faction. A program with Edge seems likely, with a match perhaps happening at Money In The Bank on July 2. It’s unclear at this time just how long The Rated R Superstar will be off television, but with Cody Rhodes injured and Roman Reigns not wrestling on normal WWE shows, it’s hard to imagine him missing more than a week or two.
