Will Smith Releases New Song 'You Can Make It': 'Music Has Always Been There for Me'

• Will Smith released a brand new single titled “You Can Make It” on Friday, June 28th

• This marks Smith’s first major music release since 2017’s “Get Lit,” which arrived nearly a decade after his last studio album

Will Smith is back with new music — and a new sound.

The 55-year-old four-time Grammy-winning rapper and actor has been on hiatus from solo music since dropping his 2017 EDM track “Get Lit,” which arrived more than a decade after his last studio album, in 2005. Lost and found. However, on Friday, June 28, Bad Boys: Ride or Die star is back with a brand new offering titled “You Can Make It.”

The uplifting single, backed by a Sunday service choir (Kanye West Jesus is the King fame) and with the help of Friday, finds Smith back in his rap bag as he shares an urgent heartfelt message with listeners.

“You’re in smoke and fire / Tight rope on the wires / I see you’re broken and tired / And all your hope is gone,” he repeats on the track. “So many body tests / Exhausted, gasping for breath / You walk the valley of the shadow of death / and when you think you’ve got nothing left, keep going.”

Later in the song, the “Summertime” rapper seems to turn his encouraging advice on himself, as he alludes to dealing with past personal battles — like the infamous incident with Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars — with lines like, “Trust me, they tried to bleed Will Smith / In hindsight I see that adversity was a gift.”

He adds: “From the madness of the labyrinth / From the saddest to the rays / The darkest night turns into day / And every storm runs out of rain.”

On Friday morning, Smith shared a video of himself playing the piano instrumental from “You Can Make It” on social media and wrote: “Through some of my darkest moments, music has always been there for me – to lift me up and help me grow .It is my humble wish that it can do the same for you and bring you all the joy and light you deserve.”

The musician concluded by saying he was “excited” to perform the new song live on Sunday, June 30 at the 2024 BET Awards.

Earlier this week, BET announced that Smith will join an all-star lineup of performers at the awards show, which includes Ms. Lauryn Hill, Megan Thee Stallion, Ice Spice, Tyla, Victoria Monét, GloRilla, Latto and more.

Smith’s return to music comes amid his box office success with his latest Bad boys sequel starring Martin Lawrence. While talking to Extra about the recent film, the Fresh Prince star teased that he’s “been in the lab” working on new music for the past year and a half.

“I have a project that is, without a doubt, the most personal and powerful music I’ve ever made,” Smith shared. “So, you know, I’ll tell you that in about a month.”

It is unclear if his new single will appear on the upcoming project.
