Turn that frown upside down: there could be more Smile movies on the way.
Writer-director Parker Finn is already thinking about what could happen in potential sequels to the horror franchise.
The second film, starring Naomi Scott as a tormented pop star dealing with grinning demons, debuted in theaters on October 18, two years after the Sosie Bacon-led original became a surprise blockbuster in 2022.
“There are so many exciting roads that Smile he might fall,” Finn said The Hollywood Reporter at the sequel’s premiere in Los Angeles on October 14.
“We will have to see how the audience reacts Smile 2but I think that’s what’s great about it Smile Is there an opportunity to tell different kinds of stories and place ourselves in different worlds that Smile then he goes in and attacks,” he added.
The director also told GamesRadar+ that “if we’re lucky with how the audience can connect and accept” Smile 2 at the box office, “I Think the Sky’s the Limit” with additional sequels.

It looks like Finn has already lined up his next project outside Smile universe: Multiple outlets reported in June that he was in the early stages of writing and directing a remake of the 1981 horror film. Possessionwith Robert Pattinson also producing.
More than Smile the lore of the franchise is revealed and expanded upon in the second bonkers film, which briefly carries over star Kyle Gallner’s character from the first film to move the story along.
Like Finn said A den of nerds magazine, they wanted to “make sure we were coming back to make a sequel that really paid off”, something “unique and really our own”.
“In the first film, there’s a lot of mystery, and the audience learns about what the character is like. In the second film, they come with more knowledge than where the character is,” he explained. “Because the audience is potentially in front of the character, I wanted to lean into that and see if I could use that against the audience and invite them.”

He continued, “I like this idea of a part of the movie if the audience starts to feel like, ‘Oh, wow, wait. Am I evil? Am I doing this to a character?’ ”
In September, Finn said SFX magazine, he predicts that each sequel will become wilder than the last.
“There are some ideas that I think are very exciting. I think it’s really fun to imagine a lineage Smile movies where each one gets more off the rails than the last,” he said. “What’s really interesting Smile is that you can find yourself in different stories, different characters, different worlds.”
