Despite their efforts, officers said a woman in her 60s died at the scene.

The woman’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by a family liaison officer.

Officers are now asking any witnesses or drivers with dashcam footage to call 101 quoting 5224036088.

National Highways said the M4 is closed westbound between junction 19 and junction 20.

There was a one-hour delay that stretched back four miles on the approach to the scene.

The National Highways operations manager said on Saturday: “The westbound carriageway will need to be closed for some time and road users are advised to avoid traveling in the local area and use alternative routes if possible.”

Motorists not caught in the gridlock were advised to follow the full triangle: exit the M4 at junction 19 and at the roundabout take the first exit onto the M32 towards Bristol.

Exit the M32 at junction one and take the third exit at the roundabout onto the A4174 westbound.

Stay on the A4174 for approximately two miles to the junction with the A38/Filton roundabout – then take the third exit onto the A38 roundabout.

Continue on the A38 for approximately three miles and join the M5.

Take the first exit to join the M5 south west or the third exit onto the M5 north to join the M4 again.

The news comes after the mother-of-eight died in a horrific accident on her way to her 40th birthday holiday.
