A woman is expected to lose her leg after being attacked by a shark while swimming in Sydney Harbor on Monday.
The woman, believed to be in her 20s, was in Elizabeth Bay at around 19:45 local time when she was bitten on the right leg by what is believed to be a shark, according to reports Sydney Morning Herald and Guard.
A woman suffered “serious injuries” in the attack west of the Marina, Sydney City Councilor Linda Scott said in a Facebook post.
The woman was transported to St. Vincent is in critical condition, it said Guard. Police said the woman was “stable” when she arrived.

Police were told the woman was swimming off the dock when the attack occurred, according to reports.
One person who lives nearby said the attack happened “about 20 meters from the pier,” according to Messenger and Guard. “There was blood all over the water and all over the dock,” he added. “She was seriously injured. Her leg didn’t look good.”

A woman who witnessed the incident said her wife, who is a “veterinarian,” helped the victim put a tourniquet on the wound before she was taken to the hospital, 9News and Messenger reported.
She passed out before the ambulance arrived, so we were really a little worried, said the neighbor Messenger“but while the paramedics were there treating her, she was talking to them.”

Councilor Linda Scott asked people to “stay off the harbor until further notice” after Monday’s attack. She also expressed her gratitude to those who helped during the terrifying ordeal.
“Thank you to the passers-by who bravely came to the rescue and to St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney for caring for the victim,” she wrote on Facebook.
Members of the Maritime Area Command are “patrolling the area as a precaution” following the attack, according to Australia’s ABC News and Guard.
