News about Woody Whitelaw

The North Carolina Senate voted last week to appoint Woody White to the University of North Carolina’s 24-person board of trustees.

From 2018 until his departure in September 2021, the veteran and former New Hanover County Commissioner served on the UNCW Board of Trustees. He was appointed by Tim Moore, Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives.

New Hanover County Senator Michael Lee nominated White for election to the UNC Board of Trustees. (R-7). On March 14, the Senate Nominating Committee, chaired by Brunswick County Senator Bill Rabon (R-8), began debating six names for the committee: two new and four renominated. The next day, the nominees were approved.

The two new nominations are from white Republicans, according to committee member Sen. Gladys Robinson (D-28), who argued that the Senate should consider more diverse candidates to truly represent the UNC system.

Although women make up the majority of the UNC system, Robinson noted that there are not many of them on boards of directors. It also doesn’t have many people of color. Five of the 24 voting board members are women and four are black. White argued that the university was stifling conservative views after leaving UNCW.

After his departure, White said on Facebook: “When a conservative professor fights for equal First Amendment rights and wins $700,000, he remains ostracized by an unrepentant administration and harassed to the point of suicide.”

Mention was made of Mike Adams, a conservative professor whose teaching methods and dealings with students have been the subject of much dispute. After Adam accepted a $500,000 early retirement package from the university in early 2021, White implied that the university shared some of the blame. A settlement was reached with UNCW as pressure for him to resign increased and threats of lawsuit became more real. Adams took his own life a week before his planned retirement.

The university’s response to Associate Professor Dan Johnson, who wrote in a May 2021 Facebook post: “Put the Republicans up high,” White responded with this example. After the article was published locally in June, Johnson apologized and the institution maintained that he “acted on the information in a timely and appropriate manner,” according to WECT. White later complained in a letter to Sartarelli about double standards regarding free speech.

White commented on Facebook: “But when a liberal professor advocates violence against conservative students, no one says anything.” “Nothing is happening,”

White also criticized the university’s response to COVID-19, particularly the choice to deliver face-to-face classes digitally. She advised participants from traditional classes who have transferred online to get a refund.
