Northumbria Police confirmed the dog was destroyed at the scene to “ensure the safety of the public”.

A second dog – also an XL Bully – was seized from the property as a precaution.

Tributes have now flooded in for dad-of-one Ian, who was with his Patterdale terrier puppy Beau when the dog attacked him.

Friend Rachael Barron, 31, said: “It’s absolutely devastating that this has happened to him, he’s a lovely, lovely man.

“He’s very weakly built and couldn’t even hurt a fly, he wouldn’t stand a chance against such a big dog, it makes me sick to think about it.

“I don’t know exactly what happened, but if another dog was trying to get to Beau, the Scouse would have done anything to protect him.

“We were devastated, I couldn’t even tell the children, they will be very upset. Everyone knew and loved him, he was a wonderful boy.

“He didn’t work, but he spent all his time with Beau or helping assign people. He just loved being with people.”

Another friend added: “He didn’t deserve to die.

“He was a cunning fellow. He was friendly. It’s a tragedy.”

Terrified locals told how the police told them to stay at home as the officers raided the residential street last night.

Neighbor Linda Blyth, 56, said she then heard a “loud bang” as the animal was killed.

She added: “It appears the man was trying to get his puppy out of the way when XL Bully grabbed him.

“It’s the scariest thing I’ve ever seen.”

One witness said there was “so much blood” after the savage attack that the animal went for Ian’s throat.

Locals also claimed that XL Bully had been reported for attacking other dogs in the past.

The horror is the latest in a spate of dog attacks across the UK.

It also comes amid a growing public debate after Rishi Sunak vowed to ban American bully dogs XL.

The Prime Minister said the breed would be banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act after a spate of terrifying attacks.

Detective Chief Inspector Angela Hudson, from Northumbria Police, said: “First of all, I would like to express my sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of this man.

“This is an absolutely tragic incident and we will continue to support them in any way we can.

“A full investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances of what happened.

“I would like to reassure the wider community that there is no ongoing danger to them and officers will remain in the area to provide security and carry out investigations.

“Although our investigation is at an early stage, we believe that those involved knew each other.

“I would also continue to ask people not to speculate about the incident online, including on social media, while investigations are ongoing.”

Anyone with information about the latest incident is asked to call the police on 101 quoting reference number NP-20231003-0979.
