Who is Shamina Begum?

British-born Shamina Begum of Bangladeshi descent entered Syria to join the Islamic State terror group at the age of 15 in 2015. She appealed against a decision to strip her of her UK citizenship, but lost her appeal. The government rejected her appeal and she will remain in Syria.

She left London at the age of 15 to travel to Syria where she joined the Islamic State, or IS, group. Her legal team will continue to fight in court until Shaina gets justice and returns home. Chief Justice Baroness Carr said,

“One could argue that the decision in Ms. Begum’s case was harsh. It could also be argued that Mrs. Begum is the author of her own misfortune.

“But it is not for this court to agree or disagree with any point of view.

“Our only task is to assess whether the confiscation decision was illegal. We concluded that it was not, and the appeal is rejected.”

However, a member of Shamina’s legal team, Gareth Peirce, said the UK had a moral duty to take her back, as other nations had done with citizens found in Syria.

Yago Riedijk is known as Shamine Begum’s husband. Yago is a former ISIS member, fighter and controversial figure from Arnhem, Netherlands.

Yago Riedijk and Shamina married shortly after she arrived in Syria in 2015. Together they had three children, two of whom died of illness or malnutrition, and the third child died of pneumonia.

Yago Riedijk is 30 years old and is in a Kurdish detention center in northeastern Syria. He and his wife were stripped of their citizenship by their governments.

Yago was born and raised in Arnhem, the Netherlands, to a middle-class family that attended public school. He had a passion for music and sports. He was not a religious man and had nothing to do with Islam or the Muslim community. He described himself as a normal Dutch kid. He had a very nice childhood.

When he was 17, he met a Muslim girl on the Internet and fell in love with her, so he converted to Islam, taking the name Yaqoob and started going to the mosque where he learned more about his new religion. Over time, he was influenced by Internet propaganda and extremist preachers. His family did not approve of his conversion and his views, so he became estranged from his family and friends.

He began to feel rejected by Dutch society and decided to leave the Netherlands and joined ISIS in Syria in October 2014, informing his parents that he was on holiday in Turkey and crossed the border into Syria with the help of smugglers.

He went to Syria because he wanted to help the oppressed people and fight against the enemies of Islam in Syria. He attended a training course and pledged allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. He received a weapon and uniform from the ISIS leader and was assigned to a combat unit.

Yago Riedijk was involved in several battles and witnessed the atrocities committed by the terrorist group, but he did not dare question or criticize them because he was so afraid of the consequences, but he had no choice so he followed orders. He revealed that he had been brainwashed and manipulated by ISIS ideology and propaganda.

In February 2015, Samina Begum, who was a 15-year-old girl from London who ran away from her home with two of her school friends to join ISIS, met Yag Riedijk at the women’s center in Raqqa where she had been staying since her arrival. . Yago was informed that there was a girl who wanted to marry, but Yago was not interested because of Sam’s age which was 15 years old, but he accepted the offer anyway.

Yago said that he was lonely and was looking for a partner, and he found her in good condition, who chose herself, so he got married 10 days after the first meeting. They started living as a married couple in a house in Raqqa and gave birth to three children, two boys and a daughter, but their children are not alive.

Their first child, son Abdullah, died of pneumonia at the age of 8 months. Their second child, son Amin, died of malnutrition and a blood infection at the age of 6 months.

Yago and Shamina’s daughter Sara died of a heart defect at the age of 2 weeks. Yago was heartbroken and blamed ISIS for the death of his children because the living conditions under ISIS were not good, they were horrible and inhumane. They did not have enough food, medicine and security. In order to get a peaceful life, they had to move from place to place to avoid airstrikes and enemy attacks.

Even Yago Riedijk and his wife Shamina Begum tried several times to escape from ISIS, but they could not escape and they felt that the decision to join ISIS was their biggest mistake. Yago was imprisoned and tortured by ISIS after members of the ISIS group accused him of being a Dutch spy. However, he managed to escape from prison and met his wife, and they escaped from the ISIS stronghold of Baghuz in 2019.

Yago Riedijk surrendered to a group of Syrian fighters, while his wife Shamina and their newborn son Jarrah ended up in a refugee camp in the north of Syria.

Yago is currently in a Kurdish detention center in northeastern Syria. If he returns to the Netherlands, he faces 6 years in prison for joining ISIS. However, he wants to provide a better life for his wife and son, so he is ready to face justice and cooperate with the authorities.

However, the Dutch government revoked his citizenship and declared him an undesirable alien. The government has no intention of returning it in any way.

The British government also revoked Yaga’s wife Shamini’s citizenship. She is also ready to face justice and rehabilitate herself.

Currently, the couple is separated and has not seen each other since they left Baghuz.
