Yasin Malik is a Kashmiri militant turned separatist leader who supports the separation of Kashmir from both India and Pakistan. Malik is on trial in a series of cases, including terror funding and the killing of four Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel in Rawalpora, Kashmir in 1990.

Yasin Malik was born on Wednesday, April 3, 1966 (57 years old; as of 2023) in Maisuma, Srinagar. His zodiac sign is Aries. Yasin Malik graduated from Sri Pratap College, Srinagar. According to Malik, he witnessed violence against Muslims by security forces on the streets of Kashmir in his youth, which was one of the reasons why he resorted to armed movement. He was one of the first people to cross the Indian border into Pakistan in 1988 for armed training. After that, he carried out an armed insurgency in the Kashmir Valley and attacked Indian security forces and innocent people many times with his gang. He renounced violence in 1994 and adopted a peaceful solution to the Kashmir conflict. He was arrested many times and spent many years of his life in jail. Yasin Malik is currently imprisoned in Tihar Jail.

Militancy and ceasefire
In 1988, Yasin Malik crossed over to Pakistan-controlled Kashmir and received weapons training from the ISI in a terrorist camp in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK). In 1989, he became a leading member of the then militant group Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), declaring his goal to liberate Kashmir. He along with other members launched several attacks on Indian security forces and Kashmiri Pandits living in the valley, killing hundreds of innocent people to send a political message. He waged a guerrilla war against the Indian security forces. He was arrested in August 1990 and was imprisoned till 1994. Thereafter, Malik and his group JKLF declared a ceasefire and turned to a peaceful solution to the Kashmir issue.

Malik also confessed to his crimes in an interview with Tim Sebastian of the BBC. He admitted to killing several militants and unarmed people in Kashmir, including the murder of Justice Ganju and the killing of four Indian Air Force personnel in a deadly attack by JKLF militants in 1990.
The case against Yasin Malik
- In April 2019, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) of India arrested Yasin Malik, chief of the Jammu and Kashmir National Liberation Front (JKLF), for allegedly financing terrorist and separatist groups in Jammu and Kashmir. The NIA claimed that Yasin Malik received Rs 1.5 crore from Watali on April 7, 2015, part of which was used to incite riots in the Valley after the killing of Hezbollah commander Burhan Wani in 2016. Currently, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is hearing the case in the Terrorism and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) court in Jammu in 2020.

- The separatist leader is also accused of killing four Indian Air Force (IAF) officers in 1990, when armed rebellion broke out in the Muslim-majority region. Seven people, including Malik, were accused of killing IAF officers in the region’s main city of Srinagar. The Jammu and Kashmir High Court suspended their trial in 1995, but overturned the ruling in April last year.
- Malik is a suspect in the kidnapping of Rubaiya Saeed in 1989. Rubaiya is the daughter of the then Union Home Minister and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Saeed. Currently, in 2020, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is hearing the case in the Terrorism and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) court in Jammu.

- Yasin Malik was detained by police after he hit a policeman in Srinagar. The incident took place when Malik and his followers were protesting against the BJP-PDP’s stand in support of Kashmiri Pandits.
- In December 2016, separatist leader Yasin Malik was arrested by Jammu and Kashmir police in Pulwama for trying to protest against the accommodation of West Pakistani refugees.
- In May 2017, India Today journalist Kamaljit Sandhu was attacked by Yasin Malik. Sandhu was about to record his reaction to a special investigative report, Hurriyat Truth Tapes, when Malik snatched her phone and smashed it to pieces.
- On May 19, 2022, he was convicted in the terrorism financing case after pleading guilty. Earlier, he was charged with violating Sections 16 (terrorist acts), 17 (collecting funds for terrorist acts), 18 (planning to commit terrorist acts) and 20 (membership of a terrorist gang or organization) of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and Sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 124-A (sedition) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). On May 10, 2022, he pleaded guilty to all the charges and said he would not challenge any of the charges against him. The court said in a nine-page order,
The amicus curiae was directed to visit the accused in jail and have legal consultation with him so that the accused could be aware of the maximum sentence that could be imposed if he pleaded guilty… Thereafter, the accused Yasin Malik also pleaded guilty to the charges levelled against him.”
- On May 25, 2022, Yasin Malik was sentenced to life imprisonment by a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in New Delhi after he pleaded guilty to a terrorism financing case. Justice Praveen Singh announced the verdict and said:
The criminal may have surrendered his guns in 1994 but has never shown any remorse for the violent acts committed before 1994 and is still committing violent acts. The crimes committed are of a very serious nature and are intended to strike at the very core of India and to forcibly separate Jammu and Kashmir from the Union of India.”
He was sent to Tihar jail and lodged in Jail No. 7, where he was kept in solitary confinement in a well-equipped cell.

Facts/Trivia
- In 1983, Yasin Malik along with several members of the ‘Tara’ party disrupted a cricket match between India and West Indies at the Sharif Kashmir Stadium.
- Malik still lives in his ancestral mud house in Maisuma, Srinagar.
- Yasin Malik was reportedly subjected to severe abuse in prison, which left him partially paralyzed on the left side of his face and with hearing loss.
- The Indian government banned the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) under Section 3(1) of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 1967.
- According to reports, in Vivek Agnihotri’s critically acclaimed film The Kashmir Files (2022), Chinmay Mandlekar played Farooq Malik Bitta, a character that was reminiscent of Yasin Malik.
- On July 26, 2022, he was admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi after his blood pressure was found to be fluctuating. Malik had reportedly gone on an indefinite hunger strike since July 22, 2022, as the Centre did not allow him to appear in person at the Jammu court hearing in the 1989 Rubaiya Saeed kidnapping case; Malik is an accused in the case.
