Career
He was the U17 world champion in 2003 but lost to Amir Khan at the junior championships in 2004. He also lost twice to fellow countryman Luis Franco in the featherweight division and finished third in the 2004 national championships in the featherweight division. He moved up to lightweight in 2005 and had more success, winning the Cuban championship from 2005 to 2008.
Yordenis Ugás also won the PanAm Championships (instead of the PanAm Games) in 2005. In 2005, he also lost twice to Kazakh southpaw Serik Sapiev. He was a member of the Cuban national team that won the World Boxing Championship in 2006, as well as the Central American Championship that year.
In 2007, Ugas defeated Yordan Frometa and Roniel Iglesias in the national championship. Later that year, he won the PanAm Games in Rio, defeating Darleys Pérez and Everton Lopes. He then won the Olympic qualifier after defending against old nemesis Luis Franco at the nationals. Daouda Sow of France defeated him in the semi-finals in Beijing. He faced and defeated Roniel Iglesias in the national finals after moving up to junior welterweight.
Ugas moved to the US in March 2010 with the intention of becoming a professional boxer. On July 9, 2010, he made his professional debut. On March 9, 2019, he faced Shawn Porter for the WBC welterweight title in his first career fight. Ugas dominated most of the fight. He started celebrating after the match, while Porter remained motionless.
However, he lost the bout after two judges scored the fight in Porter’s favor, 116-112 and 115-113, while only one judge scored the fight in his favor. The match was seen as a controversial split decision victory for Porter, with the crowd booing the outcome. In the next match, he met former world champion Omar Figueroa. He took on Spence Jr and faced Pacquiao in his first defense of the WBA (Super) title. The fight was competitive, but Ugas dominated and won by unanimous decision of the judges.
After his title defense against Manny, he applied to the WBA for a special dispensation to avoid a mandatory defense against Eimantas Stanionis to face IBF and WBC champion Errol Spence Jr. in the fight for the title unification. As a result, Ugás and Stanionis were given 30 days to work out the details of their fight.
Due to the impossibility of reaching an agreement, a bid was ordered on December 9 with a minimum bid of $200,000. As the reigning champion, Ugas would receive a 75/25 split of the winning bid. According to WBA President Gilbert J. Mendoza, the Spence-Ugas deal was accepted because Stanionis was willing to step down on December 19, 2021.
The unification match was officially announced for February 8, 2022. The fight was scheduled to be the main event of the April 16 pay-per-view event at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Showtime handled the PPV distribution. He was defeated by technical knockout in the tenth round.
Due to Ugaso’s severely swollen right eye, the referees stopped the fight on the advice of the ringside doctor. He lost on all three judges’ scores at the time of the break, with scores of 88–82, 88–82 and 88–83. In addition, he threw fewer total punches (216 to 96) and fewer power punches (192 to 77) than Spencer Jr.
