Grasshoppers are a type of insect that children love and that gardeners fear, writes Leafy Place.

This is because the winged insects are considered pests, as they swim through the crops and quickly devour the leaves.

America boasts hundreds of native grasshopper species.

They mostly eat leaves, but also flowers, stems and seeds.

Several species eat poisonous plants and store the poison in their bodies to protect themselves from predators.

Large grasshoppers can jump between 10 and 20 times their body length without the aid of wings.

And in many countries they are considered a delicacy.

They are difficult to find among autumn leaves, as grasshoppers are colored to blend in with their surroundings, usually a combination of brown, gray or green.
