COSTA RICA has performed on the international stage for more than 100 years.
Founded in 1921, the national team made its debut at the Independence Centennial Games in Guatemala City.

Some fans believe that the old Costa Rica shield is like an optical illusion
After defeating El Salvador 7-0 in their first game, Costa Rica won the trophy with a 6-0 victory over Guatemala.
The team quickly rose to fame, becoming the second strongest team in the CONCACAF zone behind Mexico in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.
However, they fell in the ranking in the 1970s, while Honduras, Haiti and Canada rose.
After missing the 1998 World Cup, Costa Rica changed its national team’s crest from a simple red, white and blue crest to one that included the image of a person playing soccer.
The design was refined in 2001, a year before the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan, and reworked in 2014 to include a gold figure between red, white and blue circles.
However, at first glance, some fans claimed that the circular lines create the illusion of an endless tunnel.
Since then, the Costa Rican badge has changed again, but this time it looks completely different.
In 2021, the current coat of arms was introduced, inspired by the Costa Rican flag and national coat of arms.
