You’re a genius if you can spot the hidden sport in Benfica’s badge which has nothing to do with football

PORTUGUESE giants Benfica have been around for over a century, but have you ever noticed the hidden meaning behind your club crest?

Benfica is one of the three great teams in Portugal along with Porto and Sporting Lisbon and has never been relegated.

Benfica has its current shield since 1908

The nickname is Eagles due to the symbol at the top of the club crest.

Benfica was originally known as Sport Lisboa and played its first game in 1905.

In 1908 they bought the Sport Benfica Group and changed their name to Sport Lisboa e Benfica as a result of the merger.

Then they added something to their coat of arms that has nothing to do with football.

At the bottom of the coat of arms there is a bicycle wheel, which was added because cycling was the most important sport of Grupo Sport Benfica.

The wheel has remained since then as part of Benfica’s crest.

Benfica is the most successful club in Portugal with a total of 85 trophies won in its history.

They were the first Portuguese club to achieve a domestic treble in 2014 and have won the Portuguese league a record 38 times.

The Eagles clinched their first Portuguese title in four years with a 3-0 win over Santa Clara last weekend.

Roger Schmidt’s side have suffered just four defeats in all competitions, three of which came in April.
