Yvon Chouinard is an American climber, philanthropist, environmentalist and businessman in the outdoor recreation sector. The environmental commitment of his company Patagonia is well known.
Chouinard’s father was a Canadian French mechanic. Yvon and his family moved to Southern California in 1947 from Lewiston, Maine.
Chouinard enjoys tenkara fly fishing and is also an experienced surfer, kayaker and falconer. He wrote about ethical issues related to climbing, business and environmental protection.
His early climbing friends were Tom and Royal Robbins. As a young man he founded the Southern California Falconry Club and was a member of the Sierra Club.
His falconry research introduced him to rock climbing. He decided to learn blacksmithing to make his own climbing tools, which he then sold to save money and adapt his climbing style.
Personal life
At California State University, Fresno, where she studied art and home economics, Malinda Pennoyer was the woman Chouinard fell in love with and eventually married. They have a daughter and a boy (Fletcher) (Claire).
