At Gamescom 2023, Netflix not only revealed more footage from Rebel Moon, but revealed that the sequel is scheduled for April 19, 2024. What Does Rebel Moon 2’s Release Date Mean For The Franchise?
Generally, Hollywood franchise films are released several years apart. This is mostly due to the fact that whether a sequel happens is often dependent upon how well the first movie does at the box office. More time between releases also allows studios to deploy powerful marketing campaigns, with trailers and interviews with stars building hype for months ahead of a film’s release. Netflix and Snyder, however, have taken a different approach with Rebel Moon.
Early on in its development, Snyder decided that the amount of story he had planned for Rebel Moon would be better suited for two movies. The film’s estimated budget of $166 million made the projects quite a steal for Netflix, then, with each installment only costing $83 million. Although only two movies are 100% confirmed at this point, Snyder has made no secret of the fact that he hopes to make a third Rebel Moon and potentially a TV show as well.
Rebel Moon: The Scargiver‘s release date being set so soon after the first film could end up being a smart move if the first movie is a hit. The momentum generated from the first movie may not have dissipated much by the time the sequel’s marketing push happens, which could result in lower subscriber churn rates for Netflix and an increase in viewership during the sequel’s initial release window.
