When Zain’s mother was 36 weeks pregnant, she noticed that the fetus was not moving properly in her belly. So Zain’s parents went to the hospital for a routine check-up. After examination, doctors discovered that there were some abnormalities in the pregnancy, so they performed an emergency caesarean section. Zain weighed three pounds at birth and did not cry after his birth. Doctors later examined him and discovered he had congenital cerebral palsy, a condition that affects a person’s ability to move, maintain balance and posture. Shortly after his birth, he was admitted to Children’s Hospital in Seattle, Washington, USA. Zain has been treated in hospitals throughout his life. In an interview, when talking about Zain, his father said,

The staff, nurses, and doctors at Seattle Children’s Hospital showed compassionate and respectful understanding of my brother’s rights. They also lead by example, teaching young advocates like me that demonstrating inclusive leadership is critical to achieving change with greater acceptance. Whenever possible, I talk to people about the importance of fostering inclusivity. I use my personal experiences that give me a unique perspective to try to share and inform others. “
