Zain weighed three pounds at birth and did not cry after his birth. Doctors later examined him and discovered he had congenital cerebral palsy, a condition that affects a person’s ability to move, maintain balance and posture. Shortly after his birth, he was admitted to Children’s Hospital in Seattle, Washington, USA. Zain has been treated in hospitals throughout his life. As parents, our lives are shaped by the needs of our children, and we hope that in our journey to honor Zain we can improve and innovate care in every community for generations to come. Zain loves music and has a wide range of tastes spanning eras, genres and artists. He loves everything from Leonard Cohen to Abba to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and wants to be able to browse these artists and fill his room with whatever music suits him at any given moment. “
Zain’s sister Tara said in an interview,
Zain’s course made me passionate about ensuring every voice is heard and respected, because a quieter voice does not mean a smaller voice. The staff, nurses, and doctors at Seattle Children’s Hospital showed compassionate and respectful understanding of my brother’s rights. They also lead by example, teaching young advocates like me that demonstrating inclusive leadership is critical to achieving change with greater acceptance. Whenever possible, I talk to people about the importance of fostering inclusivity. I use my personal experiences that give me a unique perspective to try to share and inform others. “
