Zarina Hashmi Career
On July 16, 1937, Zarina Hashmi, also known as Zarina, was born in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. Her mother came from a family of bibliophiles, and her father was a professor of mathematics, so she grew up in a setting rich in culture.
Zarina became interested in painting at a young age. She was exposed to Islamic architecture, miniature painting, and calligraphy, all of which had a big impact on how she perceived art. She attended Aligarh Muslim University after completing her high school education to study mathematics with a minor in art.
After getting married to her diplomat husband Saad Hashmi, Zarina relocated to Bangkok, Thailand, in the 1950s. She continued to pursue her artistic inclinations by enrolling in painting and printmaking programmes wherever they lived despite moving owing to her husband’s job postings. Her artistic perspective was further moulded by her exposure to other cultures and surroundings.
Early in the 1960s, Zarina relocated to Paris, France, where she enrolled in the École des Beaux-Arts to study printmaking. She learned woodblock printing techniques and was exposed to Western modernist art styles around this time. Zarina embraced minimalism, emphasising clear lines, geometric shapes, and a small range of colours.
Zarina moved to New York City in 1974, where she settled and continued to grow as an artist. Her work was greatly impacted by her immigration experiences and yearning for a feeling of place. She investigated the concepts of displacement, memory, and identity while frequently depicting floor plans, buildings, and other architectural features as representations of her own and society’s past.
Zarina became well-known for her distinctive aesthetic and meaningful subject matter. Traditional artisan methods including papermaking, woodblock printing, and embossing were frequently used in her artworks. Her pieces had depth and substance because she used delicate materials like handmade paper, gold leaf, and natural colours.
In various solo and group exhibits over the course of her career, Zarina displayed her artwork globally. Prestigious venues featuring her work included the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, the Guggenheim Museum, the Tate Modern in London, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
In-depth personal exploration of her own experiences of displacement, as well as more general themes of boundaries, home, and memory, were all central to Zarina’s artistic practise. She gained praise from critics for her contributions to contemporary art and got a number of prizes, including the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours, in 2011.
