A source close to Zayn, also 31, has now shared how his former bandmate has been dealing with the devastating news.
An American music producer who is currently working with him told DailyMail.com that the hitmaker is surrounded by loved ones because they “don’t want him to be alone” at this difficult time.
They said: “He is in shock and his parents have contacted Liam’s family to offer their support and condolences.”
A source revealed the pair hadn’t spoken in “a while” due to previous feuds, but had “respected each other from a distance”.
“They didn’t hate each other, but they couldn’t see eye to eye on different things.
“But they both felt they were taken advantage of in the music industry.”
The Sun has contacted Zayn’s representatives for comment.
Both Liam and Zayn were singers in One Direction between 2010 and 2015, when the latter quit and went solo.
Things haven’t always been smooth sailing between them, and Liam’s ex-fiancée Maya Henry told fans about the violent feud in a recent TikTok.
During an appearance on Logan Paul’s Impaulsive podcast in 2022, Liam revealed that there was once an altercation backstage that turned violent and he was pinned against a wall by one of his former bandmates.

Officers investigating Liam’s death are reportedly looking for two potentially key witnesses who could be among the last to see him alive.
Police are now looking for two women who were allegedly with Liam the night before his untimely death, reports Argentinian newspaper Infobae.
It is understood that both women then left the CasaSur Hotel without him after waiting for the Briton in the lobby.
The women, if identified, could help establish what happened in the hours before Liam’s tragic death.
There is no indication that women could be involved in any way in the fatal fall of the star.
Investigators reportedly seized a bottle of whiskey, a lighter, a phone and a notebook found in the pop star’s apartment, according to Infobae.
Disturbing pictures have emerged showing white powder, burnt aluminum foil and a smashed TV screen in Liam’s hotel room.
Several photos show the interior of the luxury apartment of the former One Direction singer in the luxury hotel CasaSur Palermo.
They appear to show traces of white powder and burnt aluminum foil in the bathroom and living room.
A green lighter and a container of Dove soap are also found on what appears to be an untidy desk in the junk room.
Clarin, Argentina’s largest newspaper, was the first to publish the pictures alongside a report that read: “Damage and drugs in the hotel room where Liam Payne stayed in Buenos Aires.”
Officers have yet to confirm what substances were found in the room, but will be testing them soon.
In the room, next to a half-drinking glass of champagne, you can also see a smashed television.
Clarin and several other publications such as La Nacion confirmed that the photos were taken after Liam was found unresponsive outside.

SHOCKED friends, family and fans have paid heartbreaking tributes to Liam as news of the singer’s death made its way around the world.
Harry Styles’ mother Anne was among the first from the One Direction camp to share her reaction, posting a photo of Liam and writing ‘Just a boy…’ alongside a heartbroken emoji.
Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden shared a picture of the pair together with the words: “What a terrible tragedy.
“Sending love to his family and all who loved him.”
X Factor star Olly Murs has told fans he is “devastated” and “speechless”.
He wrote on social media: “Liam shared the same passions as me, the same dreams so to see his life end so young now hits me hard, I’m really heartbroken and devastated for his family and of course his son Bear who is losing his father x”.
Liam Gallagher said he was “very sad” and told his followers on X: “Life is precious Kids, you only get to do it once, take it easy.”
Former X Factor presenter Dermot O’Leary also expressed his shock and spoke on This Morning.
He said: “I remember him when he auditioned for X Factor as a 14-year-old and blew us away singing Sinatra. He simply loved to sing.
“He was always joyful, had time for everyone, polite, grateful and always humble.”
BBC Radio 2 presenter Zoe Ball reacted to the “devastating news” on her show today and told fans she gave her own son Woody a big hug this morning.

And the chilling photo – said to be his last – shows the 31-year-old returning to the CasaSur hotel in the Palermo district on Wednesday.
The picture, shared by local America TV, shows the singer leaning against a wall in the same outfit he was seen wearing earlier.
The handlers said that was the last time he was seen alive just moments before he reached his hotel room.
Liam was in Buenos Aires on tour with his former bandmate Niall Horan when he died after falling from the third floor on Wednesday afternoon.
Emergency services chief Alberto Crescenti said initial findings indicated he had fractured his skull.
A final 911 call from hotel staff on Wednesday revealed they needed “emergency” police officers to help with a guest who was “behaving erratically.”
Just minutes before his death, Liam shared a Snapchat post showing himself with his girlfriend Kate Cassidy looking in the mirror.
